The G.A.T.E.WAYS Challenge – An Overview
For our Term 4 mid-week program, we will invite schools to participate in The G.A.T.E.WAYS Challenge 2012.

Journeys
In these programs children
from grades 1 - 6 spend one morning a week for four weeks developing skills in
a specialised area of the curriculum. Journeys held "On Location" at venues other than schools are often held over one or two full days.
The program content is
presented at a more advanced level and at a faster pace than is often
possible in the regular classroom.
Teachers nominate children for Journeys. If your school does not normally organise students to attend G.A.T.E.WAYS, then phone 9894 2116 or email Denise to see how you can get involved.
Journeys are hosted by several primary schools around Melbourne
each term.
Schools hosting Journeys
provide three spaces for G.A.T.E.WAYS, as well as an area for
registration on the first day.
G.A.T.E.WAYS is happy to hear
from any school that would be interested in hosting Journeys.
:: Please visit the Journeys calendar for details on programs run in your area. Brochures for individual programs may be accessed via the links on the Journeys calendar:

Brainwaves
The G.A.T.E.WAYS Brainwaves Club is based on the philosophy that highly able and gifted children have particular needs for stimulation and challenge that match their high level of curiosity and desire to learn. In addition, children with specialised skills and talents in advance of their age peers need both affirmation of these abilities and opportunities for talent development.
These children also need opportunities to mix with like-minded peers and to form rewarding friendships that further foster their interests, social skills and self-esteem. The need for a high level of mental challenge and stimulation is sometimes not fully appreciated with young children. They may not show advancement in all areas. G.A.T.E.WAYS clubs also seek to provide a setting that promotes positive social interactions, self-confidence and pleasure in learning. All curriculum areas- science, maths, language, technology, philosophy, creative arts and more are offered. Clubs are designed to be challenging, but most of all, fun.
Nomination: G.A.T.E.WAYS requests that parents arrange for an appropriate person (eg.a teacher) to fill in the nomination section. This is to verify that the applicant is highly able. That way, parents and club leaders can be confident that the children will not only enjoy being members of the club but will benefit from the experience. In the past we have felt that some children were not able to cope with the program content which has impacted on their club experience. Further to this, DinoMites club members will require a teacher nominee to complete a checklist.

Out on the Town
Sadly 'Out on the Town' will not be offered in 2012. 2010 was our sixth annual 'Out on the Town' series of workshops for gifted and talented Year 7, 8 and 9 students. The program offered a range of enjoyable and challenging workshops in a number of different areas. These workshops provided you with an opportunity for challenge beyond what you are currently doing at school. It also gave you the chance to meet and work with outer 'like-minded' students.
‘OUT on the TOWN’ was hosted by various venues including City Cite, 12th floor, 474 Flinders Street, Melbourne, Circus Oz, 340 Bay Street, Port Melbourne, The National Gallery of Victoria, St Kilda Road, Melbourne, Gene Technology Access Centre, 77 Story Street, Parkville.

Pilots on Probation 'On Location' - Canberra
Pilots On Probation is a G.A.T.E.WAYS program ‘on location’ at airports. It is for both boys and girls from Years 5, 6 and 7. It introduces students to the fascinating world of aviation – including hands-on flying in a plane and a simulator.
It is equally beneficial for those with a burning ambition to be a pilot, those interested in the mathematics and science of flight, and those who like to give things a try! The sessions are designed to entertain, involve and challenge the reasoning abilities of gifted students and to inspire them to follow their natural curiosity and innate instinct to learn.
Details of dates and locations for 2012 will follow when finalised.
