TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES WITH G.A.T.E.WAYS FOR FOR 2008 AND BEYOND

Over the last fourteen years over 200 people from a range of different backgrounds (primary, secondary & tertiary teaching; science; mathematics; the arts; politics; sport; philosophy & thinking skills ) have presented programs for G.A.T.E.WAYS. Our organisation runs educational programs for children who have special educational needs because of their advanced or potential abilities. This can be academic ability across a range of curriculum areas or talent in one area. G.A.T.E.WAYS is always seeking presenters of the highest quality to develop and teach programs to gifted and talented children. These presenters must be:

  • Experts in their given field or fields
  • Passionate about their field and able to convey this enthusiasm to children
  • Knowledgeable about the special needs of gifted children and how they learn, or be prepared to do some training in this area
  • Extremely creative and skilled in terms of curriculum development and delivery. The programs must not be 'chalk and talk' and teacher focused but inquiry based, with lots of hands-on activities, problem solving; higher order thinking skills etc. Gifted children are extremely capable of understanding advanced, abstract concepts and curriculum well beyond their chronological age, so long as the teaching methodology is appropriately adapted. Programs which are particularly popular are those programs which are scenario-based or 'hypotheticals' - children enjoy having their learning embedded within such a framework. Programs need not follow the CSFs but take children well beyond the regular curriculum. G.A.T.E.WAYS will always consider any proposal if we feel it is an area that will inspire the children. We also work with and advise presenters at the program development stage.
  • Willing and able to travel throughout the metropolitan area. G.A.T.E.WAYS runs its programs at host schools, from Bonbeach to Brunswick; from Malvern to Mooroolbark, and anywhere in between. If a presenter is engaged to run a Eureka program (see below) for example, that person would be engaged every Wednesday or Thursday in a given term. Each week he/she will go to a different school somewhere in Melbourne. If a presenter has devised a problem solving mystery 'Journey' (see below) he/she might be engaged to run the same program in a number of different venues over a term/terms.
Individuals who work for G.A.T.E.WAYS are not engaged full time. Engagement is on a 'per program' contract basis and is extremely flexible. Some presenters who are particularly prolific in program development and very skilled in delivery may work on two, three, or four days a week in any given term. Other presenters might prefer to offer their services on one particular day of the week. Presenters must have an Australian Business Number. All presenters must provide a current Police Clearance. They must provide all their own teaching materials and equipment, although we can request use of such things as whiteboards, TV/videos from the host school. Rates of pay for all programs on application.

G.A.T.E.WAYS is interested in talking to people from all fields, but especially in the areas of science, mathematics, problem solving/thinking skills, spoken English (debating/public speaking), politics/world issues, history, art, and drama.

Below are details of the different types of programs that we will offer in 2008.

If you are interested in being involved in any or all of these programs, we would be delighted if you could submit a proposal (or several) to us along with a copy of your CV. We are asking all of our past presenters as well as new applicants to send proposals as soon as possible. If your submissions show potential we will contact you for an interview.

New programs for Terms 2 - 4 can be submitted at any time, but preferably by the end of January 2008.

We will then select programs on the basis of how they best fit into our overall timetable.

TWO DAY 'EUREKA' PROGRAMS
DAY 1 (WED) - GRADES 1, 2, 3   OR DAY 2 (THURS) - GRADES 4, 5, 6

Term 1:   'What’s The Big Idea?'

Term 2:    'Mathematical Paradoxes'

Term 3:    'Incredible Journeys'

Term 4:    The G.A.T.E.WAYS Challenge for Grades 3/4 WED, Grades 5/6 THURS, Grades 1/2 FRI
( a team competition based on a series of challenges across the curriculum involving problem solving/teamwork/thinking & communication skills/leadership)

Dates: Can be forwarded on application.

For Terms 1, 2 and 3, presenters are required to teach a variation of the same 90 minute session with each of the three different groups of children on Day 1 and/or Day 2 with a group introducory session at the start of the day. Each presenter will devise part of a program which links in with the other two sections. The themes for each term are noted above. In Term 4 Presenters devise a number of variations of a particular half hour team Challenge, in the Case of Grades 3-6 or forty-five minutes in the case of grades 1/2.

It is important that workshops include some hands-on activities. When presenters are devising programs it is critical that the requirements of a differentiated curriculum for gifted children (content, process, product) are incorporated/implemented into the program.

Presenters will be engaged for each of the Wednesday or Thursday dates listed above in a given term. Each day the program is taken to a different host school.

FOUR SESSION JOURNEYS

Presenters are required to devise a 10 hour program which will be taught over four sessions 9.30 - 12.00 (4 weeks). If waiting lists get long enough, presenters may be asked to repeat their Journey in the afternoon (12.45 - 3.15). Once a Journey has been devised it can be repeated in different locations around Melbourne.

We are interested in programs across all areas of the curriculum, but particularly in the maths/science and literature area.

Dates: can be forwarded on application

QUESTS

Quests run for one morning a week (9.30 - 12.00) for eight weeks. Presenters are required to devise a 20 hour program. Quests may be offered in Terms 2, 3, & 4.

G.A.T.E.WAYS 'ON LOCATION'

Presenters are required to devise a 10 hour program which will be taught over four sessions 9.30 - 12.00 (4 weeks) or in 2 full day sessions (9.30 - 3.15) in a venue other than a school, eg a dance studio, an animation studio, an airport, an art studio, a computer or science lab etc.

Presenters who propose an On Location program need to have a venue in mind.

G.A.T.E.WAYS IN RESIDENCE - A LONG TERM PROGRAM

G.A.T.E.WAYS currently looking for an appropriate venue with approximately 3 suitable teaching spaces as well as an administration area to run long term programs for highly gifted children. If anyone knows of such a venue, we would love to hear about it.

THE BRAINWAVES CLUBS

Clubs will meet on a fortnightly basis during term time from 1.30 - 4.00pm on Saturdays. Dates can be forwarded on application.

Presenters may wish to submit semester long proposals outlining programs for one or more of the following clubs:

  • Grade 1/2 DinoMites: science/mathematics/technology focus)
  • Grade 3/4 SciSpies: science/mathematics/technology focus)
  • Grade 5/6 Einsteins: science/mathematics/technology focus)
  • Grades 3/4 - Leonardos: design and construction
  • Grades 1-3 – Munchkins: art/drama/books & writing
  • Grades 4 - 6 – Apprentices: art/drama/books & writing
  • Any grade - Check Mates: for experienced chess players
In Semester 2, we will also run The Bright Buttons for Prep children.

Proposals for The Brainwaves Club should be in 8 session/Semester blocks and you may present for one or more clubs over the course of the year. Because the club program is on a weekend, the program should have a club atmosphere, and not replicate another day at school.
