Beyond Online

The G.A.T.E.WAYS Online Beyond is a program designed for highly able students in Years 1 to 6, to nurture gifted and high-ability students through challenging, engaging and interactive learning experiences with like-minded peers. Online Beyond enables students to participate from the comfort of their own home, all you need is Wi-Fi and a device. Presenters are experienced teachers and/or passionate experts in their field, and you can be confident that your child will receive an engaging, yet academically rigorous lesson shared with like-minded peers from around Australia!

Online Beyond offers a range of programs each school term. In Term 1, there is one round (4 weekly sessions) offered, allowing students to settle into the routines of a new school year. In Terms 2-4, there are two rounds offered per term, and you can enrol for both rounds or choose one. Subjects on offer are usually Science, Maths and Creating Writing. There are also some fantastic cross-curricular sessions on offer too, which cover a range of subjects such as literature, geography and history, in addition to maths and science. Each Online Beyond session runs for 60 minutes commencing after school on a weeknight, 4:30pm Melbourne/Sydney time.

FAQ

How do I know if my child’s academic ability is right for this program?

If your child is consistently receiving A grades in a particular area of subject focus you wish to enrol them in (i.e. Science or Creative Writing) and you or their teachers have noticed that they are operating at a higher ability than their peers, this is an excellent program to help extend your child in their learning.

What age level do I register my child for?

The programs are designed with gifted children in mind, you register your child for their current school year level, which will cater for both their age and ability.

For example, the 1/2 program are for students in Grade 1 or 2, but the program content is designed 2 years or more ahead (so content is 3/4). The 3 /4 program is for students in that year level and content is 5/6 etc.

Do I have to enrol and attend all 4 sessions?

Yes, sessions are now offered as a package of four rather than individual enrolment sessions. This is because most students attend all four sessions and you won’t need to remember to register each week! Booking for a complete round of sessions, will also help the presenter and attendees to know if their program will go ahead with minimum enrolment numbers required from the outset.

Prior to the program commencing, you will register and purchase the package of four sessions. If you wish to enrol after the block of 4 sessions has started, you can get a pro rata price (e.g. You want to join in session 3&4 and missed 1&2). You can email the office for assistance. office@gateways.edu.au

Are sessions recorded if my child misses a session?

Sessions provided are live and interactive sessions only. Due to child safety and privacy, sessions are not recorded.

If you have any questions, please contact Kathryn, our Online Beyond Program Coordinator via email online@gateways.edu.au or phone 03 9100 1222. We will guide you through the process and answer any questions you may have.

4:30 – 5:30 PM (AEST)

Help! There has been mathematical mischief occurring all over Australia and we need YOU – the finest maths minds in the country - to hit the road and help find out whodunnit at each stop! Join in to solve Mysteries 5 - 8. We have mysteries to solve at the Phillip Island with the system not keeping track of the number of penguins, in Barossa Valley with the suspicious loss of recent harvest records, there has been chaos on the Sydney Harbour Bridge with unusual foot traffic and the final mystery in the heart of Australia at Uluru where strange silhouettes appeared around the rock. During each session we will collect clues and piece together the solution to that session's exciting mystery. Can you save the day before time runs out?

Write Like A Boss.png

YEARS 3 & 4

April: 30 & May: 7, 14, 21
4:30 – 5:30 PM (AEST)

Over the next four weeks, you’ll be sharpening your writing skills to get that Write Like a Boss edge. First, we’ll be taking a deep dive into the three-act structure—setup, confrontation, and resolution—that holds every great story together. Next, we’ll explore how to make your story come alive with interesting characters who appear to be stereotypical but end up revealing a mind-blowing side to themselves that readers would never expect. You’ll be learning the partnering of story arc and your character arc, plots, and beats that move your story forward. Then it’s time to roll up your sleeves and whip your story into shape with show rather than tell immersive writing exercises. The grand finale will be a dose of good fun with dialogue practice where we get to guess who’s speaking simply through your choice of words, slang and dialects

HACKED How Biology Gets Hijacked.png

YEARS 5 & 6

April: 30 & May: 7, 14, 21
4:30 – 5:30 PM (AEST)

In this 4 week program students explore how living systems communicate and how certain molecules can disrupt, block or hijack those signals. From plant chemical defences to deadly venom that interferes with the nervous system, students investigate the invisible battles happening inside living organisms. Across four live sessions, students map biological systems, model signal pathways, design their own “hacker molecules,” and explore how evolution shapes both attack and defence. This is biology as systems thinking. It's dynamic, surprising, and often sneaky.

Wimpy Kid Investigations Inc 1-4.png

YEARS 3 & 4

May: 26 & June: 2, 9, 16
4:30 – 5:30 PM (AEST)

Greg Heffley looks like he is going to be in trouble again. It’s not enough that he lives with the ever-present threat of the cheese touch, but now he is confronted by four mysteries that he’ll have to solve… and Greg looks like he’ll get the blame for it all. He has to do more than write this up in his diary… I mean, his journal. He has to create Wimpy Kid Investigations Inc.

Creating Einsteins Maths Tool Kit 5-8.png

YEARS 1 & 2

May: 26, June: 2, 9, 16
4:30 – 5:30 PM (AEST)

Although we know Albert Einsten was a genius, few know that he was supported by his Assistant, Helen Dukas from 1896 to1982. She ensured Einsten had all the resources he needed for his work and discoveries. Unfortunately, Einsten’s Maths Tool Kit has gone missing and needs to be repacked with foundational mathematics concepts and rules. Do you have the skills and knowledge to help? During this series we will strengthen foundational mathematical skills and knowledge. Each session will focus on a specific concept so students can put their skill to the test in a variety of projects and help to capture 3 key rules to be added to Einsten’s Maths Tool Kit. The first four sessions will focus on measurement, time, numbers and roman numerals.
